In this immersive learning experience, students leave the classroom to learn on location in an environment that emulates a professional film production. Students apply for a below-the-line crew position and work within a departmental hierarchy to collaboratively produce a short film alongside faculty and professional mentors. The Set Skills for Cinema Production badge demonstrates the student鈥檚 preparation for entry-level assistant work on professional film and television sets.

The Digital Cinema Production Arts BFA at 小黄导航 University offers student filmmakers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a chosen production or story development craft while contributing to the creation of a significant undergraduate thesis project in a year-long Capstone sequence. While pursuing their BFA degree, each student will also attain additional certification in their chosen focus area.

The BFA is a restricted program with an additional portfolio application and technical skills demonstration requirement beyond the general admission requirements of SOU. Freshmen students interested in the BFA will typically be admitted first as a BA or BS major in Digital Cinema before they are eligible to apply to the BFA program, while transfer students who have completed at least 36 college credits may apply directly for BFA admission from their transfer institution. Specific portfolio and technical demonstration requirements will depend on the student鈥檚 Capstone focus area. BFA concentration areas include:
Directing Scripted Narrative for the Screen: Students collaborate with actors in SOU鈥檚 Theatre program to learn about performance techniques and cultivate their distinct directorial voice utilizing the visual language of cinematography and editing. Each student directs a thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Screenwriting & Story Development: Students learn to write short scripts as well as long-form projects for film and television. Each student completes a long-form screenwriting thesis for their Capstone project.
Producing & Production Management: Students learn the nuts and bolts of film budgeting and scheduling, the business aspects of the entertainment industry, and the secrets of crowdfunding, while also taking several core classes from SOU鈥檚 elite Business program. Each students either produces a thesis short film or serves as a production manager or assistant director on a thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Documentary Production: In this interdisciplinary concentration, students learn documentary conventions and technical skills while exploring a subject area of their choice. Special attention is paid to the ethics of documentary filmmaking. Each student completes a thesis documentary short film for their Capstone project.
Cinematography & Production Technology: Students learn several technical areas of film and television production, with particular focus on camera operation and lighting techniques. Students work as a cinematographer or in a similar technical role on a thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Media Post-Production: In this comprehensive interdisciplinary concentration, students master computer-based post-production skills, including digital video editing, sound editing and design, color grading, compositing, motion graphics, and visual effects. Students work as an editor, post-production supervisor, or in a similar post-production role on a thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Sound Design: In this interdisciplinary concentration, students explore sound design in numerous contexts, including for film, theatre, and virtual environments. Students work as a sound designer on a thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Animation & Motion Design: In cooperation with the Emerging Media & Digital Arts program, this concentration offers students the opportunity to combine their filmmaking skills with digital animation. Students will direct an animated thesis short film for their Capstone project.
Scenic & Environmental Design: In cooperation with SOU鈥檚 famed Theatre program, this concentration offers students the opportunity to explore production design, art direction, set design, and prop construction for film, television, and theatre. Students will work in the art department of a thesis short film for their Capstone project.

The Cinema Production Technology badge provides a strong foundation for students interested in securing entry-level employment in broadcast media, corporate video production or communications departments, and in assisting freelance video producers. When completed as part of an undergraduate degree, the Cinema Production Technology badge will supplement graduate applications to MFA programs in film production or adjacent programs. Students will complete the badge with a portfolio of produced work samples demonstrating the range of production technologies.

Master of Theatre Studies /academics/degree/master-of-theatre-studies/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 23:28:45 +0000 /academics/?post_type=degree&p=90400 The Master of Theatre Studies in Production and Design is an intensive program specifically designed for working middle school, high school and community college theatre educators that provides thorough training in the essentials of script analysis, design, and production aspects of the theatrical process. All courses for the Master of Theatre Studies meet on the SOU campus over three summers. The curriculum includes required coursework before and after the two-week summer residency period and throughout the academic school year. In addition, students will take three elective courses during their residencies.

The SOU residency portion of the program includes active discussion of production elements, including script analysis, scenic, costume, lighting and sound design, direction and stage management, stage management, hands-on training in all production areas, and practical application of technical processes. Evenings are spent attending plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, followed by an evening of play analysis and discussion, plus other special events including time to work on projects.

The degree and concentration are designed to prepare artists to manage and lead on a local, regional or national scale; combine business strategy with community insights in innovative and resourceful ways; and connect artists, the arts, and audiences in ways that transform their communities. This program can be completed in five years along with a Bachelor鈥檚 degree from the Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU (Art, EMDA, Creative Writing, Music, or Theatre) or other arts-related course of study. Acceptance into the program is based upon declaration and acceptance into the SOU graduate programs.

We offer our students the added benefits of small class sizes in a cohort system, which means you begin the MBA program with a group of students and continue throughout the program with those same students. Working in a cohort-based program has proven incredibly rewarding and has many advantages for developing future business leaders. The MBA program is accredited through the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
